The football season is winding down for some teams and gaining momentum for others in the running for provincial championships.

The Bow Valley Bobcats face the #1 ranked tier 3 Cochrane High Cobras this Saturday Nov. 4 to determine who will advance to the south semifinals.

The two meet at the SLS Legacy Sports Field at 12 noon in what well could be a snow bowl. While the Cobras are heavily favoured to win, the Bobcats say they have nothing to lose.

"We're working hard for the game," says Bobcats co-head coach Cam Cote. "All the pressure is on them, we have no pressure. They're ranked number one in the province, it's not like we're going to lose any sleep over that football game. There's a lot of pressure on them and we'll see how they handle it."

The Cobras waltzed their way through the Rocky View Sports regular season and were not only undefeated in all six regular season games but put up an astounding 291 points while allowing a mere 32 against. They continue to be the team to beat in tier 3 football in the province and it's believed the #2 ranked Cardston Cougars, of the Southern Alberta High School Football League, will be their biggest obstacle to making the provincial final. Cardston finished their season with a 8-1 record.

The previous meeting between the Cobras and Bobcats this season has potentially changed the way football is overseen by Rocky View Sports, says Cote.

The Bobcats say there was an understanding it would be a junior varsity game but the Cobras felt otherwise and put out their starting senior players as they would for any league game. In a matter of  11/2 quarters, the Cobras took a 35-0 lead. An unjury to a Bobcats player ended the game abruptly and while the result was reviewed, the game was awarded to the Cobras.

The points weren't an issue to the Bobcats. They were more concerned over what they saw as a breach in trust. They also have concern with the schedule that saw their team playing three games in 10 days, something he says is a no-no in the highly-physical sport. Cote took these issues to the Rocky View School Division.

"After a thorough review of the game between Cochrane High and Bow Valley, Rocky View Schools will be introducing new guidelines to further enhance sports within the division," says Cote.

Still, there's a game to play this Saturday and the Bobcats enter with 2-4 record, 65 points scored and 150 against. They ended their regular season with a junior varsity game against the Bert Church Chargers and were doubled 28-14.

Last Friday, under the light, they played an exhibition match against the Drumheller Titans and lost 21-0. The Titans scored early and followed it with majors in the third and fourth quarter.

The Bobcats' defense saw a lot of time on the field while their offense sputtered and played hard.

"It was very good test for everybody," says Cote. "On the first drive, I don't think the defense was ready for the physicality of the game, but after that I think they matched them. They stepped up and we got better through the game, which is kind of our thing."

In tier 2 Rocky View football playoffs, Springbank beat Chestermere 30-3, then went on to master George McDougall 30-8 to advance to the south semifinals.
