A Calgary man has died after falling into the Bow River near Mînî Thnî on Christmas Day.

Emergency officials were called to an area near the Morley Bridge after the man fell through the ice while taking photos.

Const. Kelsey Davidge of Alberta RCMP says when emergency crews got there they were unable to locate the man.

"Upon arrival the male was already under the water. An ice rescue team from Canmore and a fire department boat was utilized to search the water however the male was not located."

The body was recovered the following day.

"On December 26th, the victim, a 61-year-old male resident of Calgary was recovered deceased from the river. RCMP believe that the victim was taking a photo when he fell through the ice."

The deceased's identity has not been released.

Police are warning residents about ice safety. With the changing weather conditions and above-average temperatures, it is hard to tell the strength or thickness of ice by its appearance.
