The Cochrane Chaos are now tied for first with a game in hand in the south division of the Alberta Female Junior Hockey League after a 1-0 win over the Central Alberta Amazons, Jan. 12, that went to the bitter end in sudden death overtime.

In the dying seconds of overtime, Kaylin Herman broke through the Amazons stellar defence and laced a backhand shot, top shelf, glove side against Nisa Barlett, one of the top goalies in the league.

The Chaos had been controlling the play for the better part of two periods and while the Amazons were more of a threat in the third, especially during late period powerplays, neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Sudden death ensued and it looked like a shootout would decide the winner until Herman weaved her way through the Amazons defence and finally solved the riddle of Barlett with 7.4 seconds remaining.

That was the final regular season meeting between the two top teams in the south division. The Chaos have won four of the five and should they remain tied at the end of the regular season the Chaos will finish on top.

Chaos head coach Derek Loomer believed his team outplayed the Amazon in a game that could have gone either way in overtime.

"I thought we played really well. We just wanted to get rewarded early than seven seconds left in overtime, but we'll take it. It was a good solid effort by the girls and we'll take it into our game Sunday and hopefully continue to roll."

The Amazons continue to put up a solid defence that tries to keep opponents on the outside. The Chaos did have success in creating traffic in front of the net but there were no breaks to be had on their tip shots that either hit the post or rolled off the side of the net.

"It's always a battle to get sticks on pucks in close and they've got great goaltending, so even if you get the chances you have to have a good shot. You're not going to just get lucky with a smack on the puck; you have to get really good wood on it and find a corner."

"Kaylin did a great job on that last break. She made a smart play on the goal."

Chaos 4, Titans 1

A three-goal third period lifted the Chaos to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Titans, Jan. 7, to kick off the New Year.

Ashley Richard scored a pair and singles went to Kiera Davidson and Kaylin Herman, who also had an assist. Faith Gette had a pair of assists and single helpers went to Karly Dwyer, Cochrane's Kyla Kruger, Brette Matheson and Jenna Wasylik.

All-Star Game

Previous to that, five members of the Chaos were part of the south division team in the league's all-star game hosted by Penhold, Jan. 6. Selected for the all-stars were Shelby Kirkpatrick, Breanna Martin, Audrey Buston, Alyson MacDougall and Megan Parkyn.

The north won the intense game, 3-2. It was the league's first all-star game since 2016.

The Chaos finishes their weekend homestand against the Edmonton Wolves on Sunday, Jan. 14. The puck drops at 5 p.m. in Totem One.

The Chaos haven't lost since early in the season when they came home winless from a north division swing and lost their first outing against the Amazon.
