A local Cochrane woman has created a unique way to support single community-spirited moms during the holiday season.

Carey Lee has created a movement designed to ripple kindness to those who aren't looking or expecting anything. This is the third year, Lee has surprised a few local single moms with a gift basket just for 'her'.

'Chicks for Chicks' raises most of it's funds by re-gifting used, higher end quality jewelry. Lee says its, a win-win opportunity, recycling and spreading holiday cheer at the same time.

"I just thought there's a bunch of jewellery that is beautiful and unloved in all of our closets or drawers; reuse, recycle is something important to me. You have a bunch of great jewellery and what do you with it? Do you give it away, throw it away, you could give it to Home Treasures?! I just thought this is a perfect way to reuse, recycle."

Lee sets up a couple of events before Christmas where she sells the recycled jewellery for a donation; monies raised are then used to supplement the gift baskets.

The baskets have a variety of items from gift cards, to a book, jewellery, beauty products, and a favourite for most women, chocolate.

Lee looks for those women who never seem to ask for help.

"It is honouring women who work hard, single moms who don't complain too much; they aren't stuck in a negative frame of mind they just plow ahead, work hard, and ideally the candidate would also make helping people in Cochrane part of their life."

Lee is not exactly sure, what or where this movement will grow into, but for now she is happy to create special moments for some well deserving moms.

"I really believe that small random acts of kindness can change our world, from mental health issues, confidence, self esteem issues, it can help so many things. If Cochrane as a community where we can raise children and have people in our community make the world a better place, and hopefully get rid of hate, jealousy, and greed, that would be great."

If you have any jewellery or a gift card you would like to donate you can email Lee at jcdlee@shaw.ca, she is also still looking for nominations of well deserving single moms.
