After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the popular tradition of a hockey game between Bow Valley High and Cochrane High is on!

The 19th Annual Cochrane Classic hockey game is happening this Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at SLS Family Sports Centre with the puck drop at 4 p.m.

Both schools’ leadership teams have been busy organizing the event from arranging the venue, to finding players, assembling the hockey teams, and hyping the excitement to bring the event back to what it used to be. Bow Valley High leadership student Sierra Heier says, “It’s been a long two years, with COVID and everything so we’re finally getting to connect the schools and bring everyone back together with the hockey game between the schools. I think it has been missed. It has happened ever since Bow Valley was a high school and ever since it started.” No doubt, the return of the annual event will help to bring back a feeling of normality for the schools and the community.

The event is also a major fundraiser for the Cochrane Activettes Food Bank. In 2020, the last Cochrane Classic raised $4500. Naturally, the leadership teams are hoping that the 2022 event can better that amount.

All the proceeds from the $2 admission will be donated to the food bank. SLSFSC has once again generously donated the ice time for the event.

Everyone is encouraged to attend, showing their team spirit, wearing their team colours while loudly cheering on their team.

Like the battle of Alberta, the battle of Cochrane has a long history in our town and Heier says, “Since the schools are two big rivals in town, I think that it brings a lot of excitement to the community and after the two years, it’s well deserved. I think everyone really wanted to have something come back like this.”

The entire community is invited to get caught up in the excitement while supporting a worthy cause.
