As the temperature continues to dip down, Cochrane RCMP members have kicked off their annual Operation Cold Start.

Vehicle owners are being advised not to leave their cars running with keys inside. The objective is to deter crimes of opportunity, where car thieves can easily gain access to unlocked, running vehicles, and potentially enter the owner's garage or house.

Cst. Clayton Gelinas says their goal is to reduce crime by educating drivers on steps they can take to help keep their property safe.

"If we see a vehicle running and it's unattended, we'll go and check the doors. If it's unlocked, we'll put a business card inside to warn people and make them aware that it could be gone, it's more of an awareness thing."

In 2021, 8.3 per cent of vehicles stolen in our province were left idling.

Gelinas says there are a few simple things you can do to enjoy a warm vehicle this winter while making sure your property stays safe.

"If you can't park in a garage or a driveway, ensure that your vehicle is parked in a well lit area. Visible anti-theft devices like steering-wheel locks can help mitigate those vehicle thefts. Always lock your vehicle doors, even if you're parked in the driveway or a garage, so have a second set of keys."

Police also suggest using an automatic car starter to warm your vehicle and remind drivers to never leave valuable items such as wallets, keys, purses, or even change visible in an unoccupied vehicle.
