The countdown has begun for what is considered one of the toughest amateur rodeos in Alberta.

Finishing touches are being added to the 56th Annual Lions Club Labour Day Weekend Rodeo, and, boy, there's a lot to look forward to enjoying.

The rodeo is coming off new record attendance set last year, and are hoping to set some new records this year, says Lions president Chris Connon.

This Saturday, Aug. 12 is an important one to circle on the calendar for local rodeo participants. They'll be accepting local entries and entries for all the kids' events--mutton busting, wild pony racing, mini broncs-- from 9 a.m. until noon. Phone (403) 932-3928 in that time window.

Connon says it's the only day they'll be accepting entries for these popular events.

He says they've spent hundreds of volunteer hours improving the rodeo grounds to further enhance the viewing experience for spectators and to make the grounds more functional for the participants.

"They're going to find that the rough stock action has been pushed out into the arena a bit more so that they're closer to the bucking shoots. Six or seven feet might not seem like a lot, but it really makes a huge difference. Visually, it's all right there."

They've also partnered with Kioti Tractors and soon the shoots will be painted in their bright orange colour.

Connon says they appreciate the many who have stepped forward to help sponsor the rodeo, and some sponsorship opportunities remain.

Tickets are now available online here and will also be available at the gates, whether with cash or via one of their pay terminals.

"We're not totally cashless, but we want to work with everybody, so you don't have to find cash to come enjoy the day."

The rodeo kicks off with the Ranch Rodeo on Friday night. Admission is free, thanks to long-time sponsor Slimdor Contacting.

"It's a little bit of a different rodeo," Connon explains. "The events are based on the work that has to be done on the ranch every day."

It's followed by a three-day FCA rodeo.

Special features include Women's Ranch Bronc, where contestants are attempting to qualify for the finals in Cheyenne, WY. The mounted shooters are also returning.

There's also a special salute to the 100th anniversary of the creation of the pancake breakfast on Friday, Sept. 1 starting at 8 a.m.

"We've teamed up with the Stockmans because it's the 100th year of the Pancake Breakfast, and they've got some tricks up their sleeves for it."

Watch for more as the date draws closer.
