Many will remember lining up for chicken at the old KFC on Hwy. 1A.

The long-time home of the international chicken franchise has been closed for some time. Now, the vacant building is well on its way to being demolished.

Crews began tearing it down this morning, and it should be completely demolished today, says Dan Froese, project construction lead for Urban Systems.

As it comes down, the building materials are being pushed into piles, then loaded onto tandems to transport away.

"Knocking the building down will take probably six to eight hours, so it'll all be done today, and then hauling off the material will probably extend into Monday," says Froese.

The building itself isn't in the path of the twinning of Hwy 1A now underway, but Froese says it makes sense to do it at the same time.

"It's something the town had to do anyway to develop the park space here, so it was a good opportunity to tie it in with this contract, and we typically get better pricing when we tie it into a larger project."

The new KFC location has been open for several years in the Quarry shopping district.
