The horses are ready to ride and the bulls are ready to buck on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

It's rodeo weekend, and there's a full slate of activities set to go at the Chiniki Rodeo Grounds.

Homer Holloway, committee member for the Canada Day Rodeo said the three-day Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR) tour rodeo kicks off today.

"It's a Friday and Saturday rodeo and then Sunday is the top 10 final. It's our qualifier rodeo, whoever wins automatically gets a buy into our Las Vegas finals."

One of the events taking place this year is the Indian Relay Race, which made its debut at the Calgary Stampede in 2022.

Holloway said the athletes are coming from all over Alberta and the US.

He said they're hoping for a big crowd. "As many as we can get. People are excited."

There will be vendors on hand and rodeo-goers will have a chance to try some traditional food.

"We'll have food vendors there, our traditional bannock burgers. We'll have regular burgers too."

A Jr. Youth Rodeo kicked off the event yesterday that featured steer riding, team roping, dummie roping and Jr. bull riding.

Admission is only $5.

The rodeo is being held at the Chiniki Rodeo Grounds.

To celebrate Canada Day with a bang, fireworks are set to go off at around 11 p.m. Saturday at the administration building in Morley.
