Earlier this week, Fiona Gilbert announced that she would run for a third term as a Public School Board Trustee for Cochrane on the board of trustees for Rocky View Schools.

Gilbert was first elected to the office in 2013 and she says, "There have been so many great things and challenges over the last eight years. As a school division, we have grown and tried our best to meet the needs of our growing population.”

The student population, in Cochrane, has grown by over 40 per cent since 2013 and it is a constant challenge for the board to be innovative and creative to allocate the limited public dollars across the large Rocky View Schools system.

One of the things that Gilbert says that will remain a focus here in Cochrane is the need to expand Bow Valley High School. The student body continues to outgrow the building. Gilbert says, “We will be continuing to advocate the government for the full expansion on that place in order to meet the needs and the growth of that school.” For the time being the addition of portables on site will help with the growing pains.

Gilbert remains busy as a contributing member on various boards and committees in the community. She has served as Rocky View Schools Board Chair since 2019.  She believes it is important to connect with parents, students, and schools. “I am happy to connect at any time with our stakeholders and constituents here in Cochrane. I do believe that it is important to be a strong voice for parents on the board. It is a public school board and being a locally elected school board trustee is that public voice. So, I do want to hear from parents.”
