Traffic is flowing again on Highway 1A after a serious motor vehicle collision closed Cochrane's GlenEagles Hill for over two hours this morning.

Cochrane RCMP, Corporal Matthew Quallie says higher than normal traffic volume on the hill this morning caused a number of vehicles to collide. "The collision involved four westbound vehicles that were attempting to stop with traffic. The first three vehicles were involved in minor rear-end collisions with a fourth vehicle attempting to avoid the rear end collision and swerving into the eastbound lanes colliding head-on with a Hyundai Elantra."

Stuart Brideaux, EMS Spokesperson, says given the amount of damage to the Hyundai and the nature of injuries sustained by the driver ground crews immediately called for STARS to be dispatched. "After a somewhat difficult extrication at the scene, the patient was able to be flown to Foothills Hospital in serious and potentially life-threatening condition with multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the collision."

Brideaux shares ground crews did check out the driver of the other vehicle involved in the head on, but the adult male declined EMS transport at the time.

A Collision Analyst was on scene investigating the collision which impacted both west and eastbound traffic. "Westbound traffic was most impacted, they had to travel the farthest before being rerouted back. We couldn't reroute through GlenEagles because it was just past that turnoff, so traffic coming from Cochrane eastbound towards Calgary was rerouted right pretty much at the scene, however, westbound traffic was more significantly impacted."

The collision at this time remains under investigation and Cochrane RCMP is asking any witnesses to come forth and provide a witness statement at the detachment. Corporal Quallie says at this time they can confirm drugs and alcohol were not factors and no charges are anticipated at this time.
