Four points over the weekend have extended the Cochrane Generals winning streak to five games as they continue to do everything within their power to finish high in the standings.

After the weekend, the High River Flyers are four points behind the Gens and it now appears to be a three-way race for first. With four games remaining in their season, the Gens lag three points behind both the Coaldale Copperheads and Okotoks Bisons but have a game in hand on the Bisons.

Coming into the weekend play, Gens head coach Derek Donald said the Gens are doing what's within their control and that means winning games.

"Our goal is to win six games and pick up 12 points and let the rest of the division do what they do and see where the chips fall," said Donald on Friday. "It could come right down to the last couple of games before we know who we're going to face in the playoffs."

On home ice Saturday night, the Gens dominated the Strathmore Wheatland Kings, 9-3, and took a five-goal lead before the Kings responded with three goals, but that's a close as it got. The Gens sealed the deal with a four-goal scoring spree in the third.

Talus Hume and Slater Ransom both picked up hattricks and ended the night with five points apiece. River Ross, Harry Olser and Brandon Aab rounded out the Gens scoring. Colton Wong had three assists on the night, Jarod Domingo and Austin Keller both had two and other helpers went to Will Gretton, River Ross, Scott Shugg and Taylor Girard.

The night previous they beat the Flyers 4-0 on the road with Knute Loe registering his second shutout of the nine games he has started.

Hume is now third in the Heritage Junior Hockey League's scoring race with 65 points while Ransom is one point behind and tied for fourth.

This weekend, the Gens are playing their last two home games of the regular season. On Saturday, Feb. 3 the puck drops at 7:30 p.m. against High River. The Medicine Hat Cubs are in town Sunday with a 5:30 p.m. game time.
