Provincial court judge George Gaschler has reserved his decision until Oct. 18 in the trial of a Stoney Nakoda youth accused of shooting a 60-year-old German tourist last August.

Yesterday, closing arguments were heard in a trial that began on July 15.

The court heard how German Horst Stewin had eight bullet fragments removed from his brain and is now paralyzed on his right side. He gets confused and has memory issues.

Stewin was driving eastbound on Hwy. 1A with three other family members just west of the Chief Goodstoney Rodeo Centre on Aug. 2, 2018, when a vehicle came alongside. As the suspect’s vehicle passed, a gunshot was fired from the passenger side into the driver’s window, striking the driver of the Durango in the head. The victim veered into the ditch and crashed into some nearby trees. The passing vehicle continued eastbound on Hwy. 1A.

The youth has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and recklessly discharging a firearm. A count of attempted murder was withdrawn.
