Rocky View Schools announced yesterday that the Kindergarten eligibility requirements will change as of September 2020 in order to comply with the new Education Act's standardized age of entry.

Superintendent Greg Luterbach explains,  "Starting the fall of 2020, students must be five years of age by December 31 of the year they begin Kindergarten. So for the 2020/21 school year, Kindergarten students will have to be born between January 1, 2015, and Dec 31, 2015."

The provincial government had initiated this plan a while back in order to, "Bring a common entry age for all Kindergarten students across the province, right now it's a school jurisdiction by school jurisdiction decision and it's a little bit of variance from one community to another community. That is a change for Rocky View Schools because currently, we extend that limit to 2 more months so the end of February.  So we just wanted our communities to be aware of this." said Luterbach.

The overall goal is to limit the variance between communities and the Kindergarten students' age upon entry.  The Superintendent says the ultimate outcome is, "...trying to have students in the best position to be successful in kindergarten and have all those positive experiences."

Superintendent Luterbach also wishes for parents to know that "Attending an open house is a great way for new families to learn more about RVS' play-based approach to Kindergarten programming."

Further information on the registration process can be found on the Rocky View Schools website under Schools.  Families can also register in person at the school or at Rocky View Schools Education Centre, 2651 Chinook Winds Drive, SW, Airdrie, ensure you have proof of the child's age, legal name and address.
