Cochrane’s eight-year-old Jacob Simister is on a mission to keep our landfills and oceans clean from wax crayons.

It was a lesson in school that sparked his interest to take charge “We learned that garbage is very bad for the sea animals and crayons in the ground can take worms 40 years to break them down.”

“I love turtles and my favourite type of sea animal is a catfish”

It was from there that Cubby’s Crayons was born. Based on a nickname his parents gave him, the venture plans to recycle Cochranites' used and broken crayons to keep them out of the garbage.

“Taking broken crayons from people's houses and school, I will make them into new crayons.”

“We have these molds and we are gonna put them into our oven to melt into new shapes.”

The fun, multicoloured animal-shaped crayons will then be sold for two dollars for a bag of 10. Half of the proceeds raised will go to animal-based charities.

Jacob and his family plan on visiting Cochrane’s pre and elementary schools and hopes Cochranties will also set up their own collection to be donated.

A Facebook page has been set up to contact Jacob with donations. Cochranites are also welcome to drop off their broken and used crayons at CochraneNow (10 Railway St E, Cochrane).
