A Cochrane High School student is the first female to compete at the national steer riding finals.

Fifteen-year-old Bailey Schellenberg is in Red Deer this week competing in the Canadian Finals Rodeo in junior steer riding.

Schellenberg says she's been around the rodeo scene her entire life.

She says "Being a part of the Cochrane ranch and rodeo family has played a big part in her life because I've been involved in rodeo for as long as I can remember."

"My dad is a pickup man so he took me to rodeos since I was real little."

She competes again on Friday.
