Fish and Wildlife officers are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person/s responsible for shooting and killing a bull moose that was left on private land northwest of Cochrane in the Westbrook School area. The shooting is believed to have occurred the afternoon of Wed. Nov. 13

On Nov. 13, officers received a report of a dead bull moose near Range Road 43, about 3 km south of Bottrel.

The officers located the rifle casings of a high-powered rifle believed used to kill the moose along Range Road 43. A rope had also been wrapped around the antlers of the moose, indicating those responsible had knowingly killed and abandoned the animal.

Although there are legal seasons in the area, it is believed that this moose was hunted unlawfully without a license. It is also unlawful to waste the meat.

In addition to the shot-and-left moose, officers found a second moose had been killed in the immediate vicinity and had been dragged with a vehicle to RR 43, where it was loaded with the assistance of a tractor. It is believed to have been killed the same afternoon.

Officers believe that this second moose may have been tagged, as the backing of a hunting tag was found where the moose was loaded.

A red four-door Jeep with a black top was seen in the area.
