The Helping Hands Society of Cochrane & area offers The Movers With Heart Program, which assists anyone who needs to move but does not have the financial or social resources to do so.

Chairra Nicolle, The Executive Director for Helping Hands Society says the program is more popular than ever. “We have been operating for a couple of years now and the moving program has just exploded over COVID, especially with people needing to downsize due to financial situations, or even just the real estate market has been really all over the place in our community.”

“Last year in 2020, we had a total of 31 moves. In the first three months of 2021, we've had 15. We have a core group of volunteers, but we're looking for more volunteers to help out in the community. The moves don't take all that long but our volunteers that we do have put in 115 hours in moving so far this year already.”

With the increased need of the program this year, Helping Hands is hoping for more volunteers to help lighten the load.

“If we could find five more people who are available that would be fantastic. We're not asking for a lot of people.”

“With Helping Hands, our volunteers do their volunteering on their own time, the program manager would send out a request. And if you're able to help at that time works for your schedule you offer to help.”

She says that sometimes it’s just moving one or two items that make the difference in someone’s life.

“A lot of our clients fall into the elderly or someone who's injured or has an illness and so lifting even a bar fridge into a vehicle sometimes is a challenge so we even need volunteers to kind of help with those little things.”
