Alberta is moving forward with recommendations from an advisory committee with parts of its new curriculum.

Education minister Adriana LaGrange says the new Math and Language Arts curriculums will be instituted this September for those in kindergarten to grade three only.

"We promised parents and students an updated curriculum with more emphasis on the literacy and numeracy learning foundations and outcomes students will need for success," LaGrange explains.

"We are taking a thoughtful, measured approach and implementing three new subjects in elementary classrooms this fall. The significant investment we are making in curriculum implementation will help ensure teachers have the resources they need to support students in transitioning to the new curriculum."

Originally the plan was to get the entire new curriculum from kindergarten to grade six.

"Obviously there's information and knowledge and skillsets that if we go directly to all grades has to to be transferable, so how do we scaffold that information from one grade to the next grade to the next grade, how do we do the transitioning piece and so their direction was to starting the early grades and then to follow up with the older grades in the following year, that that would provide for the greatest success in moving forward and implementation," the minister says.

The new Physical Education and Wellness curriculum will be in place this fall for kindergarten to grade six.
