Numerous candidates have declared they will be running in the upcoming municipal election and more are expected as we enter the final week before nomination day, Mon. Sept. 18.

Several have registered with both the Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County (RVC), but there's more in the running. Candidates only need to register with the municipalities if they are fundraising prior to nomination day.

In the Cochrane registry to date are council candidates Miles Chester, Dan Cunin, Bella Fallis, Susan Flowers, Scott Gibson-Craig, Tara McFadden and Jason Phillips.

There are many others. Incumbents Morgan Nagel and Ross Watson are other declared candidates, as are Vivian Cox and Alex Reed.

Two candidates have declared they will try to topple incumbent mayor Ivan Brooker. First out of the gate was Tom Hardy and just last week former town councillor Jeff Genung announced he's letting his name stand.

In RVC incumbent Bruce Kendall is being challenged by Colleen Munroe in division 9 (includes Cochrane Lake and Bottrel), incumbent Jerry Asrhinoff is being challenged by Kim McKylor in division 2 (Springbank area) and so far no opponents have registered to oppose newcomer Mark Kamachi in division 1 (Bragg Creek/Jumping Pound)  and incumbent Eric Lowther in division 8 (Bearspaw area).

On Monday, Sept. 18, nominations are being accepted from 10 a.m. to 12 noon by both Cochrane and RVC. Cochrane is accepting nominations in the council chambers, located in the Ranchehouse, 101 RancheHouse Rd., and RVC's are being accepted at their head office at 911 32 Ave. N.E. Calgary.

All candidates have 24 hours in which to withdraw and the nomination lists become official at 12 noon on Sept. 19.
