Trade irritants are always a key concern for the agriculture sector

The ongoing tensions between India and Canada remain a concern especially for provinces like Saskatchewan that export a large volume of pulses into India.

AGT Foods is one of the largest suppliers of value-added pulses, staple foods and food ingredients in the world.

Murad Al Katib, President and CEO of AGT Foods says they are closely monitoring the situation.

"I have an optimism that the channels will remain open. You know, in the interim, we are seeing bidders at the farm gate that are pulling back of course. Again it's a volatile situation, we're all watching very carefully. You can't be in a position where you have vessels enroute and the market is to be closed off. "

He notes India is one of the most important pulse markets in the world.

The Saskatchewan government is also concerned by the situation.

In 2022, total exports to India were valued at $1.4 billion, with more than 50 per cent of that trade being lentils from Saskatchewan.

The province opened a trade and investment office in New Delhi in March of  2021.
