The Cochrane Cobras dug deep to force overtime against the Bow Valley Bobcats and went on to win 63-53 in Rocky View basketball action last night.

It was a seesaw battle against the clock throughout, with the Cobras battling back to tie the game 49-49 at the buzzer. Only a few baskets separated the two teams in regulation, with the Cobras taking control in overtime.

Cobra Marcelle de Bruin believes holding off the Bobcats in the dying seconds lead to the win.

"I think the last 40 seconds is what did it for us in the fourth quarter," says de Bruin. "We were just so aggressive and really wanted the ball and fought every second. We brought that into overtime and I guess we wanted it more."

Cobras head coach Doug Jensen says an intense matchup is common between the two teams.

"I wasn't expecting overtime, but we know every game we play against Bow Valley is going to be a battle, and they battled. They are super aggressive, they made our lives very difficult, and they disrupted us. They played amazing."

The Cobras are number 5 among Alberta's 3A schools in the first ASAA rankings released on Jan. 17. The Bobcats were outside of the top 10.

"The girls have worked hard and earned that. I was hoping to be in the top 15, but we were ranked a little bit higher than what we expected," says Jensen. "But they deserve it, and we'll see what happens with the next rankings."

The Bobcats have a bye from Rocky View play next week, and the Cobras host the Chestermere Lakers on Feb. 9.

Both teams see tournament action this weekend.
