The P3 Atom Winter Classic continues to combine character-building with supporting an important charity.

The tournament attracted 14 teams from across Alberta and raised $3,900 for the "Build Them Up" mental health program of the Alberta Children's Hospital.

P3 president and founder Ryan Hilderman says this is the most ever raised in the tournament created by his company several years ago.

"There were great games, great competition, lots of fun, and when you add the charity component, it makes it all worthwhile," he says.

It's the second year the proceeds have been contributed to Build Them Up.

"The children's mental health piece is a big thing people need to be aware of, so it was great to focus on a great charity."

The funds were raised through a series of raffles, 50-50 draws, and a silent auction. The parents of local hockey players were generous in the items they provided, and the other teams had no problem showing their support, he says.

"I think it almost doubled from what we raised last year, so it was good to see the families of all the teams working together."

Three Cochrane atom teams were finalists in the tournament that wrapped up Sunday afternoon.

The tier 1 final was won by the Grande Prairie Knights over Cochrane, 3-2. The tier 3 Cochrane team also came away with silver after meeting Crossfield in their final.

The Cochrane female team competed in the Tier 5 division against boys teams. They lost a close 2-1 bronze medal final that was decided in overtime.

"We had some close games," says Hilderman. "There's so much character to be built and character-building moments throughout the tournament. That's what you like to see."

"The players know that it's more than just about the hockey. There's more to life than that. The kids come and like to fun have, and often the parents do, too. Certainly, that took place this weekend."
