Police remain at the scene of a shooting of a 60-year old visitor from Germany while he was travelling westbound on Hwy. 1A with his family near the Chief Goodstoney Rodeo Centre.

The RCMP are seeking any information on the incident that saw the man leave the highway in a Dodge Durango after being shot. He was transported by STARS air ambulance for treatment in Calgary and was coherent at the time of his departure. The three other family members in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

A motorist flagged down the RCMP shortly before noon to respond to the crash.

"At some point when they were travelling westbound on Hwy. 1A by Morley near the rodeo grounds there was a loud sound and the driver sustained what we believe is a gunshot wound to the head," says Sgt. Tom Kalis, of the Cochrane RCMP.

The RCMP are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of a black sedan spotted in the area at the time, says Kalis.

"There was a small black car that was seen in and around the truck at the time of this incident. We don't know if it's involved, but we're certainly interested in speaking with anybody who saw that vehicle or anyone who knows of that vehicle. We'd like to identify the driver and occupants and do a follow-up."

No update is available on man's condition at this time.

"At the time that he was being transported, police were speaking with him and he was coherent," says Kalis. "But it is a gunshot wound to the head and these things are quite volatile."

A substantial police presence remains at the crime scene, says Kalis, including a fingerprint specialist, police dog master and a collision reconstructionist.

"It's a very large scene and we expect it will take us some time to clear that up."
