Scammers are running gold jewelry and electronic scams throughout Southern Alberta.

Between March 2 and 14, 2023 there have been reported incidents of groups of scammers travelling throughout the southern part of the province preying on unsuspecting citizens.

Alberta RCMP is warning the public that the suspects are approaching people in parking lots, gas stations, and other public places.

The scam sees the suspects typically offering fake gold jewelry or electronics for sale, as gifts, or offering to trade for gas.

The jewelry or electronics are, of course, not genuine and are offered at a very low price.

Suspects may also tell a story about having a defective or lost bank card and how they are unable to access funds to continue their trip.

The culprits tend to use newer rental vehicles and sometimes have children with them to appear less suspicious.

RCMP reminds Albertans that the above-described incidents are considered fraud or false pretense and are criminal offences.

Anyone who encounters such a situation is asked to contact their local detachment.
