On Nov. 10, schools across the region took time to remember those who fought for our freedom.

Most ceremonies were virtual, but there were in-person ceremonies at both the RancheView School and St. Timothy High School.

Carefully following COVID protocols, RancheView School allowed their grade 7 and 8 students to experience firsthand the ceremony they worked hard to prepare. Those in lower grades had it streamed into their homerooms.

School principal Lynette LePan-Smith says they believed it was important to hold a live service to make it more meaningful for the students.

The service included a performance by their grade 4 singers, reading of the poem In Flanders Fields, and laying of wreaths.

Principal LePan-Smith spoke of the importance of taking time to reflect upon the contribution and sacrifices of our veterans.

St. Timothy High School created a Field of Crosses for their outdoor ceremony. Teacher Lauren Shearer says many came together to make it possible.

"It was a collaboration between our shop teams, our social studies teams, and leadership students. They did the research, they made the crosses, and we'd like to continue this every year," she says.

She said they were inspired by the Field of Crosses on Memorial Dr. in Calgary. The Royal Canadian Legion assisted in providing a local focus by providing information on veterans in this area.

Shearer says they hope to further enhance the Field of Crosses next year and complete more research on area veterans.

Legion president Karen Bruens was in attendance and spoke briefly.

The Legion's Remembrance Day Service is tomorrow at the Community Cenotaph, beginning at 10:45 p.m. sharp.

Field of CrossesA Field of Crosses was featured at the St. Timothy High School's outdoor ceremony. Each cross had the name of a veteran inscribed and tagged with information, and in many cases, photographs were included.
