With the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season upon us, Cochrane Fire Services has some last minute pointers to keep everyone safe this holiday season.

While people generally make 'safe' decisions, Inspector Jeff Avery, says distraction, stress, and the busyness of the holidays can sometimes lead to unfortunate but preventable incidents. "Be safe over the holidays, everyone is in such a rush and people may forget to do certain things. There are always people coming to visit and that you're going to visit, so be careful on the streets and when you're at home."

Inspector Jeff Avery

Avery gives a rundown of things you and your family should be mindful about to prevent emergency services coming to your door during the Christmas season:

  • Remember to shut off the stove/burners before you leave home
  • Water fresh Christmas trees daily
  • Do not place fresh trees near heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, candles
  • Avoid overloading your extension cords
  • Do not leave candles unattended or too close to combustibles.
  • Make sure all fireplaces/ outdoor fire pits are completely extinguished before retiring for the evening or leaving home
  • Do not deep fry a bird or other food items on a wooden deck and be extra cautious with cooking oil
  • Buckle up and make sure all passengers are restrained properly when in the vehicle
  • Do not drive distracted or under the influence of drugs and alcohol

Even though there is currently no fire ban or advisory in place for Cochrane, with little to no snow on the ground it is better to be more vigilant than not, says Avery. "Our crews are going to be here 24 hours a day over the holidays, we always are. For the crews that have to work Christmas Day away from their families, we are going to be here to help families. Hopefully, we don't get any calls but we are here to make sure you have a safe Christmas with your family."

Lastly, Avery says on behalf of all the members, "Cochrane Fire Services hopes you have a wonderful Christmas, be safe, and all the best in 2019."
