Constable Kary Moore, says Cochrane RCMP members were in attendance at the high school today to support students and their families as they returned to school. "There were zero incidents to report at this school, and it was business as usual. The RCMP is working very closely with the Bow Valley High School Administration, the student, and the students' family, that is alleged to have made the comments. As well, community support services have been offered."

Any sort of threat be it false or true, are taken extremely serious, shares Cst. Moore. "Threats that come to our attention, the way that these threats came to our attention can be very difficult to manage. We have to treat all of them like absolute real threats. However, with that being said, these false allegations are fast and furious right now. This is unfortunate because it does take up a lot of resources; it scares a lot of people. It has far-reaching ramifications when a false threat is made, which 99% of these are."

At this time, RCMP will not be releasing any information as to what the threats were about in the first place. "We normally wouldn't. Our investigation revealed that we know who made the comments but to lay a charge or proceed through the Criminal Courts' we need a lot more than just allegations. We need to prove, and have concrete documentation...which at this point, we do not have."

When it comes down to whether you should send your child to school or not in these situations, Cst. Moore says it is always business as usual unless you hear otherwise. "When we treat it like business as usual, and kids can go to school, it is because we have done a thorough investigation. We have spoken to numerous people by the time we reach that conclusion. We would never, ever send kids to school where we were concerned it was a legitimate threat."

Lastly, Cst. Moore says they are asking anyone with any information to come forward to the Cochrane RCMP detachment by calling 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. "These investigations remain a high priority for the Cochrane RCMP, and we remind students to report any safety concerns to school administration and RCMP immediately. Also sharing information that you heard and you're not sure if it's true or not, can have far-reaching consequences to all involved."

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
