The Cochrane BMX track was the place to be last weekend (September 7 and 8).

There was certainly a lot of energy felt on the track and throughout the entire town as Cochrane BMX welcomed 726 race entries on Saturday and 627 on Sunday.

Adam Ross, President of the Cochrane BMX Association, shares it was a great weekend and exactly what hosting a Provincial Series is all about. "The one thing we have going for us is the AG Society grounds. They are massive, and it enables us to incorporate everything into one place, making it that much bigger and better."

With Cochrane representing roughly 100 riders out of the approximately 700 competitors from tracks in St. Albert, Stoney Plain, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Airdrie, Okotoks, and a couple in Saskatchewan; Cochrane riders certainly did not disappoint.

Our local riders did an outstanding job at both the Grands on Saturday and the Championship races on Sunday, shares Ross. With many walking away with a highly coveted AB plate. "Cochrane nabbed 46 of the AB plates, and of those 46, we had 21 podium finishes. Those podium finishes featured racers as young as 5/ 6-year-olds, all the way up to some dads that race in their early 50s."

While Cochrane has held some big races over the past five years, this was by far the biggest. Not only was the event a success in terms of results, shares Ross, but many attendees thought the weekend was phenomenal. "Overall, we heard the event was a huge success. Folks loved the venue, space, and we had the track pretty dialled in and in good shape. You put your reputation on the line hosting the Provincial Championships, and I think we pulled it off wonderfully."

Giving a huge kudos to the board, Ross says this event would not have been possible without the help from many. "We had about ten people working pretty diligently on this for at least the past four or five months, and then this weekend, help from the entire club."

Even though the Grands and Championship races are over, the BMX Club will keep hosting open track nights and district races as long as light and temperature allow. Although many riders will call it a wrap, a handful will be competing in Chiliwack over Thanksgiving weekend.

If you are wondering if last weekend's success means hosting again in 2020?! You never know laughs, Ross. "Well, I said we should plan to take a year off; however, a lot of other board members were keen to hold a race. So we put in our intention to host a race. Once we have our AGM, and our new board members are elected, it will be their decision if they want to go after it. If we do, that decision will be made at the Alberta BMX AGM in October."
