There are many cadet programs throughout the province that help to develop and shape our youth.

Constable Jennifer Brewer from the Cochrane RCMP is an active organizer of the police cadet corps for Stoney Nakoda which is run by volunteers with the help of the RCMP.

Brewer says that the program which is held just for Nation members has proven to forge positive relationships between indigenous youth and law enforcement.

"The relationship between the RCMP and the nation has definitely strengthened. When the kids see me that took part in cadets last year and the new kids, they feel more comfortable talking to the RCMP and with this program feel more comfortable when members show up to talk to them. They realize that we're there to support the community."

The kids involved in the program are exposed to a variety of activities. Brewer says along with doing some drills and marching they also tailor in some cultural components so the kids can learn more about their culture and stay connected to their community.

The Stoney Nakoda Cadet Corps is held on Thursdays at the Morley Community gym from 3 -6 pm.
