Kindergarten students of the Fireside School got a special treat to kick off their summer holidays.

Helicopter Air Watch For Community Safety, better known as HAWCS, landed in the schoolyard so the kids and several parents could take a close look at the Calgary Police Service helicopters and ask some questions.

Having the visit was a treat that happened to fall into place for the school's 80-plus kindergarten students, says teacher Alison Humphreys.

"Sometimes the universe sends you a miracle. A little bit of magic, and that's what happens."

The students were told of the visit last week and had been anticipating the moment.

They came prepared with many questions to ask pilot Cam Buschert, including one he'd never been asked before.

"I hadn't heard, 'How do you put gas into it?' That was a first."

Sgt. Derek Field, who accompanied him, says one of the more common questions is how fast they can go.

"It depends upon the age range of the kids. They ask all kinds of different questions."

HAWCS has a robust year-round public relations agenda but only visits a select few schools at year-end.

Both Field and Buschert don't recall one being made in Cochrane, although they have done them in other outlining areas of Calgary, including Okotoks and Carstairs.
