Sweat and remembrance went hand-in-hand this morning at the SLS Centre to pay tribute to the heroic first responders of 9/11.

About 50 people came out for the workout, which includes 412 reps, one for each of the fallen first responders from the attack on New York City's Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

Originally completed by Jeremie Hoult and fellow firefighter Jeff Dommett, it has since become a larger event including other first responders and Cochranites alike.

workout 3It's an annual activity for Adam and his mom, firefighter Sarah Flimmon.

Stephanie Marrello, SLS Centre fitness programs coordinator, was moved by the memorial and encouraged them to welcome others. It's been going strong ever since.

"There are now way more from the community than first responders," says Hoult. "It's really nice, actually, and we encourage everyone to come. It's not just a first-responder thing. Four hundred and twelve first responders died that day, so it's a nice way to remember them."

"When everyone else was trying to run away from all that stuff, these guys were running into it when they were falling, so we try to keep that in mind. It's about an hour to complete, and it's a lot of thinking, a lot of remembering."

Jeff Dommett says it's great to see so many people involved.

"We were told, well some people will come--it's a hard workout, nobody really wants to do it--and then you get here and everyone's here. This is fantastic."

It was kicked off with a brief presentation by Hoult and Marrello. A group shot was taken before the workout began.
