Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors has announced the temporary roundabout and first leg of the detour along Hwy. 1A near Hwy. 22 will open on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 10, to redirect traffic around the construction area for the new interchange.

A temporary roundabout is being constructed which will become the main intersection for the detour along Highway 1A during construction of the interchange.

The temporary roundabout has been designed to allow traffic flows that are comparable to the existing traffic signal, however, traffic congestion is still expected at times.

Drivers should expect:

• A new roundabout on Hwy. 22 north of the existing traffic light

• A new detour route for the west side of Hwy. 1A, toward the Heartland and Heritage Hills neighborhoods and westbound toward Mini Thni, Exshaw, and Canmore.

• The east side of Highway 1A will remain accessible from the traffic light

• The roundabout will operate like other multi-lane roundabouts. Drivers on each approach must yield to drivers already in the circle

• Drivers should slow down and observe all new signs to ensure they are in the correct lane for their intended destination when they approach the roundabout

The second leg of the detour connecting the east side of Hwy. 1A to the roundabout is expected to be completed by Fall 2023.

The entire detour is expected to remain in use until 2025.
