Learning how to do basic home maintenance is the theme behind a workshop for women this weekend.

Heavens to Betsy is a local registered charity with a goal to empower communities through education.

The organizers are hosting a women's home maintenance workshop on Saturday.

President Tracey Sanden said they believe in the old proverb, "If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime."

"Educate people in ways that they need to be educated, be it first aid, or home repair, or nutrition or mental health. We just want to educate people to help them be self-sufficient and live a happy, healthy life."

They plan to cover topics such as drywall repair, screen building, hot water tank maintenance, faucet replacement, toilet repair, caulking/silicone, kitchen cabinet/door hinges, door knob changeout, picture hanging and seasonal maintenance.

Organizer Jolene Airth said their goal is to make sure participants have the skills they need to do basic maintenance around the house.

"You don't have to pay a lot of money to have a professional to come in, we want to prevent a professional from coming in with where we're at in our economy. That's just what it is, we're empowering."

This workshop is open to women only. Coffee breaks and lunch will be provided.

There will be door prizes on hand to win.

Tickets are $50 each and it's a fundraising event. Proceeds from the workshop will go to help fund future workshops.

The workshop goes from 9:30 am to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at the Cochrane Lions Event Centre.
