Alberta's female soccer team dominated both the Northwest Territories and the Yukon in their opening games of the Western Canada Games before facing stiffer competition from Saskatchewan yesterday.

The Alberta team, which includes Cochranite Aislin Phillips, won a closely-fought 2-0 victory over Saskatchewan yesterday to remain undefeated with one game remaining in the round-robin.

Alberta has also yet to be scored upon and remains the only undefeated team in the games.

They opened the tournament with two landslide victories over the territories. Alberta beat the Yukon, 10-0, then the Northwest Territories, 16-0.

Tuesday they face Manitoba, who tied Saskatchewan and beat the Northwest Territories.

The Alberta team has the day off before their Tuesday morning matchup with Manitoba.

(Photo/2019 Western Canada Summer Games)Alberta's women's basketball team bounced back from a 64-56 loss to Saskatchewan on Aug. 10 with a 103 to 13 win over the Yukon later that day. They went on to beat NWT, 80-40 yesterday and play Manitoba this afternoon in their final round-robin game.

Cochrane's Magdalene Smith is part of Team Alberta that is currently second in the standings. Saskatchewan is undefeated in their first three games and plays the Yukon later this morning. 

Alberta athletes are cleaning up in the medals. Alberta leads the standings with 101 medals, 35 gold, 36 silver and 30 bronze. Games host Saskatchewan has a total of 39 medals, Manitoba has 38, the Yukon 4 and NWT, 3.

The majority of those have come in the pool, where Alberta has won 24 gold, 26 silver and 20 bronze medals. Cochrane's Alexx Diep is one of the swim team's coaches.

Later in the games, Cochrane's Amy Miller will be competing in the 3,000m and 5,000m. Near the end of the games, five wrestlers from the Cochrane Cowboys will be taking to the mats.

The Western Canada Summer Games features over 1,700 athletes, coaches, officials and mission staff from across Western Canada.  The athletes range in age from 13 to 20 and are Canada's next generation of national, international, Olympic and Paralympic champions.

The games continue until Aug. 18 in Swift Current, SK.
