Eager to thow rocks?

You'll get your chance on Saturday and Sunday to try your hand at curling as part of the Community Celebration and Open House at the new aquatic and curling/multi-sport centre in the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sport Centre (SLSFSC).

Members of the Cochrane Curling Club will be on hand to teach the basics of curling and let you put it into practice by playing one end. There are are a total of 12, 45-minute time slots available, making it convenient to pick the one that suits you best so you can go on to enjoy many of the other offerings during the celebration.

On Saturday, five sessions are offered starting at 12 noon with the last going at 2 p.m. Seven sessions are scheduled for Sunday starting at 11 a.m. with the last also beginning at 2 p.m. Sessions are limited to eight people and curling equipment is provided. Wear comfortable clothes and bring clean indoor shoes.

SLSFSC is helping introduce people to the sport by initally offering a 5-week learn to curl program and currently 15 people are participating. Morgan Muise, SLSFSC curling bookings and program coordinator, says that will be followed by five-week greenhorn leagues in both October and January.

From there, some new curlers may go on to join a regular league or decide to continue with the greenhorn league.

With the expansion to six sheets from four in the spanking new facility, the curling club has already seen some growth in membership, she says, but there's room for more. Should existing leagues fill, there's the option to add more.
