St. Timothy High School is gaining quite the reputation for its growing track and field program.

The program is certainly making its mark among schools thanks to efforts made by Head Coach, Travis Cummings and the rest of the coaching staff. Growing in popularity, more and more students are seeking the school out for its outstanding track reputation.

"It's been ten years of developing a culture and a community understanding that if you want to run track or cross country and participate in a sport like that, that you can come to Tim's. The big thing that I've seen over the years is this culture of sustainability with the program. The kids buy in and it is their own community and our older athletes are starting to take their mentoring roles seriously. We have a lot of athletes that perform really well and our junior high kids look up to them and I think that made a huge difference with our program."

Creating an inclusive environment is important to Cummings, who credits the coaching staff for building a 'track family' mentality. "We try to make sure we have an end of the year potluck parties and those type of social engagements so they can interact with each other and make sure they are supporting each other. There is a place for everyone on the team; it doesn't matter if you're running, triple jumping or throwing because whether you throw 15 metres or 5 metres everyone is working just as hard. The person who comes in last in the race is feeling just as crappy as the person winning the race, the effort is the same."

But for Cummings, the biggest accomplishment has little to do with the mountain of hardware collected season to season, instead, he prides himself on the fact that he is helping to establish a mentality that lifelong fitness far beats elite performance. "Myself and the rest of the coaching staff, we're not really outcome focused it is more about the process, 'what are you learning from it and what are you doing?' If you commit to the right attitude being consistent, doing it every day and making physical activity a lifestyle than the results take care of themselves and you develop a healthy perspective on competition as well."
