Cochrane RCMP was kept busy earlier today (March 7) after a series of threatening messages were posted on social media sites in Calgary, Airdrie and Cochrane.

Corporal Troy Savinkoff, says there was quite a buzz on social media this morning and the detachment was closely monitoring the situation after a concerned community member voiced concern about a series of threats. "One of the people reading these posts made a complaint to the detachment and so we became aware of them and we spoke to Calgary City Police and made sure we were all aware of what was going on."

The individual involved is receiving the help they need, shares Corporal Savinkoff, stating the appropriate medical services have now intervened. "I don't believe that the threat was serious or at least there was no directed threat at Cochrane at any given time and now that we've determined that we have concluded our file."

When it comes to cases such as these RCMP moves into fast action. While the threats were directed at public places and not necessarily directed at any schools in the Cochrane area, Corporal Savinkoff, shares they wanted to settle the nerves of parents and caregivers. "Because we look at social media sites as well we know the big overwhelming concern from the public was the schools themselves, so trying to meet that concern from the public we made sure we kept in very close contact with them."

A note was emailed to parents by Rocky View Schools informing them of the reported threats and RCMP beefed up their presence. "We engaged a few members to do extra patrols in front of the schools just to alleviate some concern."

Up until they determined there was no real threat, RCMP kept in close contact with the schools and media releasing details as they unfolded.

Corporal Savinkoff shares he can sympathise with the public's concern and that is exactly why the RCMP moved so quickly. "We were concerned, so we made sure we found out exactly what was the threat really quickly and try to determine how Cochrane was specifically related to that threat."

Knowing that the individual is being attended to, RCMP concerns are diminished that there are no more threats to the Cochrane area nor any others.
