The Alberta Government is now taking registrations for the residential, no-charge energy saving program.

This program, one of three energy savings programs offered by the Government, offers installation of energy efficient home products such as LED light bulbs, LED night lights, faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads, advanced power-bars, and smart thermostats.

Banff-Cochrane MLA Cameron Westhead says the funds for the program come from the Government's committment to reinvestment of the carbon levy.

"The budget for the program is $21.5 million. We expect to visit about 50,000 homes and 18,000 apartment units"  Westhead adds that " the estimated amount of energy reduction is 280,000 GJ and also in terms of CO2 equivalence we expect it to reduce about 185,000 tonnes of CO2 over the life of the program".

Westhead says that the installations will be completed by Eco-Fitt Corporation, a Canadian company.

As well as installing the energy efficient products, Eco-Fitt contractors can also walk residents through their homes to make recommendations on other ways to cut their energy costs.

Registration to participate in energy-saving program started on February 28 and can be done on-line here.  Residential installations will begin in April.
