Drumhellar hosted the Provincial 55+ Game finals, where Cochrane took a gold.

There were 9 sports and a variety of categories the 300 participants competed in from pickleball, floor shuffleboard, scrabble, arts and crafts, creative writing to name a few.

Doug Campbell, Games Result Coordinator, also competed, and was part of the gold medal team along with teammate Dan Stuehrenberg.

"We won the gold in floor shuffleboard in the under age 70 bracket. Dan has been in a wheelchair for almost 40 years, he is a role model for floor curling, floor shuffleboard, and carpet bowling he is just a great guy."

Another Cochrane couple although did not medal, did very well.

"Yvonne and Henry Veldhuis they were in euchre, they did not medal, but they always do well for us. They are also our Provincial champions in horseshoes in years past."

Campbell shares the games help keep seniors physically, mentally, and spiritually active throughout their golden years.

"They allow a lot of people to get out and be active, and socialize with their peers. We do have a lot of comradery, the goal really isn't excellence in an Olympic physical kind of sense, it is to increase participation."

The oldest participant this year was a 94 year old lady who competed in carpet bowling.

Getting people off the couch has so many benefits, adds Campbell.

"It is a benefit for them, for their families, the community because they volunteer more, as well as for the Provincial and Federal taxpayers because if we are more healthy we are less of a draw on the social system and healthcare system."
