Seventeen teams are vying for berths in the Alberta 55+ Sports provincial games this weekend in Cochrane.

Doug Campbell, drawmaster and Big Country Senior Sports Soecity director, says 17 teams from Okotoks, Diamond Valley, Canmore, Cremona, and Cochrane are looking for one of nine entries into the provincial games.

The women's 55+ category is the most hotly contested berth and features five rinks from Okotoks, Springbank, Diamond Valley. and Cochrane.

On Nov. 25, Cochrane sturlers Myrna Fink and James Kimball, won the 70+ category and now advance to the provincials in February.

The zone qualifier falls on the steps of last week's highly successful Super Senior Squares Spiel that attracted 37 teams and 148 curlers.

Yesterday, Campbell released the spiel winners.

55+ men's: Rob Fiske rink, Calgary/Cochrane; second,Scott Egger, Canmore

65+ men's: Gary Hawkes, Cochrane/Bearspaw;  second: Dave Rutherford, Calgary

70+ men's: Ed Grotkowski, Calgary; second: Bill Strain, Cochrane

75+ men's: Lorne Danielson (Calgary/Airdrie); second: Keith Boothe, Cochrane

55+ women/mixed: Marnie Shipley, Cochrane; second: Dennis Graham, Canmore

60+ mixed: Norma Columbus, Canmore; second: Cinthia Zeer, Cochrane

65+ mixed: Dale Sarauer, Cochrane, second: Cheryl Whittal, Cochrane
