On November 11th scores of people filled the gymnasium of Cochrane High School in celebration of Remembrance Day.

The service opened with the entrance of Colours serenaded by the Cochrane Pipe Band. Speeches were dedicated to honour and respect those who have fought for our freedom.

Dave Usherwood, First Vice President for Cochrane Legion, says Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice because they fought for the betterment of our country.

“Freedom is to live in security so we don't have to go to bed and be fearful that we won't wake up in the morning. We are free to do what we want to do. Live where we want to live and other freedoms of choice.”

Parading members of the Cochrane Legion, RCMP, Fire Services, Canadian Forces and many others in uniform followed by the public made their way to the Cenotaph. At 11 A.M. the bugler played and the crowd observed one minute of silence. The reading of Flanders Fields led to the laying of the wreaths and ceremony finished with God Saved the Queen. The celebration continued at the Cochrane Legion where everyone was invited to warm chili, decorated poppy cookies, and beverages donated by local businesses.

Usherwood says he is very impressed with the community involvement and how the day turned out.

“Everything went very smoothly, the weather cooperated. The community supported us big time. The turn out at the high school was wall to wall. We filled it to capacity. Close to 3000 people. That's a large number for a community of 20,000 people. It's a glorious day for the Legion and the day to celebrate and to remember our vets.”

Lest We Forget.
