On Saturday evening, an emergency alert was issued, urging residents of Alberta to decrease their electricity consumption in order to mitigate the risk of potential outages throughout the province.

At approximately 6:36 p.m., the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) sent out a message saying the extreme cold weather had led to a surge in power demand, posing a significant threat to the stability of the electricity grid and increasing the likelihood of rotating power outages.

Residents are being asked to restrict their electricity usage to essential needs and switch off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances. AESO is also requesting that individuals minimize the utilization of space heaters and postpone the use of significant power-consuming appliances.

“We are calling on all Albertans to reduce their electric demand immediately to essentials only. Extreme cold resulting in high power demand has put the province’s electricity grid at high risk of rotating outages tonight,” said Nathan Neudorf, Alberta’s minister of affordability and utilities.

This alert came after AESO issued the grid alert around 3:30 p.m. due to extreme cold, high demand for electricity and low imports.

Much of the province remains under an extreme cold warning, with temperatures below -30 C and wind chill of -40 C.
