Canada's beef industry has set out to achieve some ambitious targets through the release of their National Beef Strategy for 2020 to 2024.

The strategy is developed by the seven national beef organizations which make up the Canadian Beef Advisors, and is approved by provincial partners in a unified approach to drive the industry forward.

The newest document was released after the conclusion of their 2015-2019 Strategy, where they reached nearly all their market access goals, and the AAA cutout remains 19.6 per cent above their target of $224/cwt.

Other milestones include the creation of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and Developing a Public and Stakeholder Engagement Program to help people get the facts straight on beef.

Beef Advisors Chair, Anne Wasko, says the targets fall under the four categories of beef demand, competitiveness, productivity and connectivity.

"A big challenge that remains for the industry is on the labour front, and looking at working in terms of the competitiveness pillar, that's one of the main impediments we know to expansion here in Canada for our industry."

One of their goals is to reduce the industry labour shortage by 50 per cent.

In regards to beef demand, they've now set out to support the comprehensive cutout above $270/cwt, and on the production side, they hope to improve feed efficiency by 5 per cent.
