Update: One lane for westbound traffic has reopened to traffic again. The second lane should be open before 6 p.m. 

RCMP say that 70 vehicles were involved in the crash earlier today. Five people were injured ranging from minor to serious non-life threatening injuries. 

 

Emergency crews in southern Alberta have been on the scene of a major crash involving dozens of vehicles near Brooks since this morning. 

The collision happened just after 8 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 at Range Road 142. 

RCMP said in a news release that traffic on that route is not expected to resume for "several hours".

Emergency crews are re-routing traffic at Highway 1A. 

Mounties are advising that travel on highways near Brooks is not recommended because of blowing snow, icy roads and poor visibility. 

A reception area has been set up by the City of Brooks, Brooks Fire Department and the RCMP for travellers unable to move through the area due to the conditions. The area is at the Heritage Inn (1217 2nd Street West in Brooks).
