Many Bikers from across Alberta will come to Cochrane to flood the Texas Gate Bar and Grill Saturday, after participating in the 5th Annual Ride For Bully Awareness.

The ride is put on by StopBully.com's group Bikers Against Bullying, Corey Ripley, one of the founders of the two groups, says the ride is a way to open up conversation about bullying.

"It was just a way to have a little bit of fun with an otherwise dreary subject, bullying," he says. "It's a pretty heavy topic, you see a lot of high profile suicides over the last few years, we don't like to dwell on that but it seems more common than it was 15 years ago."

One of the rides will begin in Red Deer, the other at Calgary Harley, both rides will end in Cochrane on Saturday evening, Ripley shares the ride is an international phenomenon.

"It's international we usually do a few countries, one year we had seven countries do the ride all in the same day, in 90 cities."

Bikers against bullying started 6 years ago, it has two chapters in Alberta and 6 are in the works in the United States.

Ripley explains the group does many things help stop bullying, provide support, and solutions.

"We will have guys on harley and other bikes ride kids to school that are being bullied, its like a biker buddy."

It is not just a victim support group, there are also programs for the bullies themselves.

"We want to do more work with the bullies one of the big plans is in the fall is to find a couple gyms, take the kids identified as bullies themselves, and put them into martial arts and boxing outside of school. tHE Idea there is for the bully themselves to build the self esteem, self confidence, and leadership, as opposed to them using their energy in some derogatory way."

He says one of the main solutions to end bullying is to help the bully themselves.

"Kids aren't psychopaths at 12 there's a reason they're acting out and bullying, our philosophy is if we can get a bully back on track, you may be helping 30 kids down the road you may not even be aware of."

While there will be bikers at the Gate, Ripley wants to pack the house and invites anyone in the community to come down and check out some live music.
