Bragg Creek teen Rebecca Pelkey is a fifteen-year-old downhill skier who is very excited to be heading to the Canada Winter Games this weekend.

Rebecca, along with five other members from the Calgary Alpine Racing Club will be representing Team Alberta at the downhill ski competition at Crabbe Mountain, N.B. from February 28 to March 5.

Rebecca says, “I started skiing for fun when I was four years old and then I got into the race program when I was seven or eight.” Now, the grade 10 student does her schooling online and practices five days a week at Nakiska to train for competitions. All that hard work and dedication is paying off. In early January she competed in Panorama, B.C., and qualified for the games in all three events she was entered in, placing first in every run. So, that means Pelkey will be competing in the Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super G events.

This will be Pelkey’s first appearance at the Canada Winter Games however she brought home a silver medal for Slalom from the U16 nationals at Mt. Tremblant, Quebec last year.

When asked what her favourite event is Pelkey logically says, “It kind of depends on which one I’m doing best in but normally it is Slalom, it is more technical, I like that.”

When asked what her aspirations are Pelkey replies, “I want to make it onto the Canadian National Team in the top five and hopefully make it to the World Cup.”

Rebecca and her teammates fly east on Sunday, and we wish them all the best in their competitions.

If the name Pelkey sounds familiar, it seems to be synonymous with skiing as Rebecca’s older sister Megan was recently competing and taking home medals in water skiing.
