Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warnings for the Cochrane region, as a significant cold snap is expected to grip the province for several days.

Persistent frigid conditions, characterized by prolonged periods of extremely cold temperatures and wind chills, persist.

Today, temperatures are anticipated to remain near minus 30 degrees Celsius, coupled with wind chill values nearing minus 40. As the week progresses, air temperatures are expected to steadily decline, reaching their lowest point by Saturday morning.

During the weekend, many areas will experience morning temperatures plummeting to around minus 40 degrees Celsius, with wind chills approaching minus 50.

While a slight uptick in temperatures is projected for early next week, the certainty of this forecast is low, and it is probable that temperatures will persist below normal levels.

The agency says vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, those engaged in outdoor work or exercise, and those lacking adequate shelter, face heightened risks in the prevailing cold conditions.

Be vigilant for cold-related symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, and discoloration in fingers and toes.

Ensure adequate protection by dressing warmly in layers, allowing for adjustment based on your comfort. The outer layer should be resistant to wind.

Guard against frostbite, which can develop rapidly on exposed skin, particularly in conjunction with wind chill.

Remember that if it's too cold for you to remain outdoors, it's also too cold for your pets.

Keep a close eye for signs of frostbite, such as color changes, pain, numbness, tingling, or swelling. If these symptoms manifest, promptly move indoors and initiate warming measures.

Sustain body heat by staying in motion and seek shelter from the wind whenever possible.

For outdoor workers, take regular breaks to warm up and protect against the extreme cold.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when the combination of very low temperatures or wind chill poses an elevated risk to health, including the potential for frostbite and hypothermia. Stay informed and take necessary precautions during such warnings.

We can look forward to a much warmer Monday when it's expected to reach -9 Celsius.
