Cochrane Fire Services has issued a fire advisory for the Town of Cochrane as of 3 p.m. today April 4th.

The advisory means that current conditions place the town in moderate fire danger. Inspector Jeff Avery says that in discussion with Fire Chief Dave Humphrey they decided to issue an advisory to be on the safe side. "It is getting quite dry out again and everything is starting to thaw out."

Already fielding a few calls about backyard fires and cigarette butts being tossed out of vehicle windows, Avery says a reminder to residents is sometimes all it takes. "I know everyone is getting the itch to do some spring cleaning but debris such as grass clippings, tree branches, and leaves need to be composted or taken to the Eco Centre they can't be burned, and that is not what backyard fire pits are for. The other calls have been cigarette-related as well, and we want to remind people to not throw their butts out the window or use a planter to put out your butts."

Avery says residents have always been great when it comes to advisories and bans, and he expects residents will be just as mindful with this one.

If you are going to have a backyard fire, Avery suggests taking the garden hose with you and soaking the adjacent ground when you are retiring for the night and make sure the fire is indeed out.

Fire Services warns residents that a more restrictive fire ban may be forthcoming depending on concerns such as a major wind event.

During a fire advisory, open fires are allowed, but residents are reminded to be extra vigilant. Soaking the area adjacent to the fire pits with water is recommended. "Be cautious and make sure your fire is cold to the touch before you head indoors. When you do have a fire, try not to have a rip-roaring fire, just be careful, and have a good time."

"It is just an advisory right now, but these are moisture driven and wind driven, so we are hoping for moisture to prevent further action being taken.”
