You wouldn't know it if you purchased gas here in Cochrane today, but just 15 kilometres down the road motorists are enjoying much lower prices thanks to the removal of the Alberta carbon tax.

The price of regular gas has dropped to 108.9 per litre at the Bearspaw Centex station this afternoon and is reported to be even a few cents lower at other Calgary service stations. In Cochrane, the price still remained 124.9 for regular gas at all stations at 7 p.m. tonight.

Premier Jason Kenney rose in the Legislative Assembly today to give third reading to Bill One that repeals the carbon tax imposed by the Notley government. By 12:01, as promised last week, the government started to make changes to reflect the removal of the tax.

The move has stripped away 6.73 cents per litre on the price of gas at the pumps. How long Albertans will enjoy the tax relief is up in the air. The federal government has vowed to impose its own carbon tax in its place.

In presenting the bill for third reading, Kenney said this removes a punishment imposed upon hard-working people trying to live ordinary lives.

"Our party has been working since the day of our creation for this moment," said Kenney.
